Google Docs on a migraine day: dark theme, zoom and calmer pages

Updated 2026-11-02

Quick answerGoogle Docs offers a dark theme only in its Android and iPhone apps: Menu, Settings, Choose theme, Dark. On a computer there is no official dark theme, so use Chrome zoom for larger text and a page filter for dimming and dark mode. Collaborators never see your theme.

Dark theme on Android

  1. Open the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap Menu at the top left, then Settings.
  3. Tap Choose theme and pick Dark, Light or System default.

On a computer

  1. Press Ctrl and + (Cmd and + on Mac) to zoom the page, or set a default zoom in Chrome settings.
  2. Use a browser filter to dim and darken the white page.

Good to know

  • Google says collaborators can't see the theme you choose.
  • In the app you can preview a document in light theme to check how others see it.
  • Migraine Mode adds what the site lacks: dimming, a soft-green tint, smart dark mode, frozen GIFs and blocked autoplay, all with one switch.

Not a medical device and not medical advice. Migraine Mode is a screen-comfort tool: it does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent migraine or any other condition, and it does not replace a doctor. Its settings are based on studies of light, colour, flicker, patterns and motion; the extension itself has not been clinically tested. When to see a doctor.
